The Senior Class Gift: Banners for Schaeffer-Ashmead Chapel
The LTSP 2011 senior class commissioned liturgical artist Kristen Gilje of Bellingham, WA, to make three sets of two liturgical banners each for
the seminary’s chapel. The banners were dedicated during the Godspeed and Farewell service in the chapel on May 20 (bottom photo: seminary Chaplan the Rev. Dr. Kiran Sebastian reading the dedication prayers).
The banner sets are gold/white, purple and green, explains class spokewoman Taryn Montgomery. “We went with these colors based on what we thought we could raise financially as a class toward the project,” she says. “And we felt that these color choices will get the most use during the academic year.” The banners are each 4 x 16 feet and will flank the sides of the organ pipes. All six were hung for the dedication, also hanging at the front and street ends of the chapel
Kristen Gilje is the former artist in residence at Holden Village in Washington State and has done numerous liturgical art pieces for Lutheran and other churches across the U.S. The project was made possible through about $2,450 in gifts raised by the class. You can learn more about the artist on her blog, she created a separate blog site noting her work on the LTSP chapel project specifically.
