Spring Convocation – Special Invitation for Recent Graduates

Greetings from your alma mater – The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia! As a recent graduate, you know the many sacrifices it takes to achieve a theological education. We are so proud of all our alumni, but to our most recent graduates we want to say a special “Thank you.” Thank you for choosing LTSP for seminary, and thank you for all you did to contribute to campus life while you studied here.

As a token of our appreciation, we would like to cordially invite you to our Spring Convocation on April 27-28 with our compliments. We are waiving the registration fee for a few select classes, which covers all programs and meals. Please note that you will need to register using the form on this page, below. Guests who accompany you will need to register at the regular rate. If you need on-campus housing, it is available at the normal cost. (Be sure to see the details information above the form).

We hope this small gesture will encourage you to attend Convocation. Our theme this year is “Living on the Edge”, with keynote speakers The Rev. Leila Ortiz and LTSP President Dr. David Lose. If you have any questions about registering, please contact Kathie Afflerbach at or 215.248.6324. We hope to see you in April! Thanks again!

Spring Convocation 2015

Join us Monday, April 27 – Tuesday, April 28, 2015, as The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia presents Convocation, 2015: Living on the Edge. Living on the Edge will explore how leaders in the church are both challenged and blessed by the edges that we encounter.

When we asked what edges you are encountering, here’s what you said:
• cultural divides within the church
• the realities of poverty and homelessness
• the call for the church to be an incarnational presence of Jesus in the world
• the reminder that life and death strengthen and threaten the connection we have to our faith

The Rev. Leila Ortiz

What was clear for what we heard is that the edges you encounter are both life-threatening and life-giving, and that you find Jesus at the heart of it all. “Living on the edge” is both threat and promise. Edges create boundaries and protect lives, while at the same time threaten to overtake us with change and renewal. Edges are things that God continues to push and stretch in ways that terrify and comfort us all at once. In the death and resurrection of Jesus, God’s edges are unbounded and always expanding to reach out to embrace and welcome those who feel pushed out. We have to hold all of it in tension together in order to best appreciate the work of ministry in this ever changing world. Come explore what it means to live on the edge with us.
