“Afternoon with the President”

Afternoon with the President at Luther Crest

On Monday, November 7, 2016, the Office for Advancement at The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) sponsored an “Afternoon with the President” event at Luther Crest Senior Living Community in Allentown, Pennsylvania. It featured LTSP President the Rev. Dr. David Lose, who presented his vision for United Lutheran Seminary and answered questions from the group.

The Rev. John Deisinger and his wife, the Rev. Dianne Kareha, hosted the event which brought together alumni and friends of the seminary, including Greg and Lee Butz of Alvin H. Butz Inc. Pr. Kareha offered the opening prayer.

The Rev. John Deisinger earned a BS in physics from Ursinus College and an MDiv from LTSP. He served congregations in Scranton, Allentown, Bechtelsville, Kutztown, and Easton. Since retiring he has served several congregations in transition. Pr. Deisinger served on the Joint (Lutheran/UCC) Conflict Resource Team, Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod (ELCA) Transitional Ministry Committee, and frequently serves as a supply pastor in synod congregations. He volunteers for Meals on Wheels, is congregational Vice President of St. Timothy Evangelical Lutheran Church, Allentown, and sings with Emmaus Chorale, Luther Crest Chorus, and St. Timothy’s church choir. Prs. Deisinger and Kahera moved to Luther Crest December 2013.

The Rev. Dianne Kareha served four years as chaplain of Luther Crest. Before attending Moravian Theological Seminary, where she earned her MDiv and MAPC (Pastoral Counseling), she served in higher education administration at the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned her MSEd following graduation from Gettysburg College. She serves as a supply pastor, supply organist, and volunteers with Meals on Wheels, Emmaus Chorale, and at Luther Crest.

Other participants at the event included Dennis Trotter, LTSP Senior Vice President for Advancement, who offered greetings from the seminary and introduced the president, and the Rev. Dr. John Richter, LTSP Board Chair, who offered the benediction.

Also attending were members of the LTSP Advancement Team Vincent Dent, Yvonne Lembo, Kathie Afflerbach, Merri Brown, and Karol Mason.

The event provoked lively conversation and alumni reconnections, and great food and fellowship was shared by all.

More Afternoons with the President and similar events are being planned.
