Asian Theological Summer Institute Returns to LTSP for the 8th Year
Nineteen Asian/Asian American scholars who are focused on theological education at the PhD and ThD level joined seven faculty mentors for the eighth Asian Theological Summer Institute (ATSI), May 27-31, 2014, sponsored by The Lutheran Theological Seminary and supported by Henry Luce Foundation. The Institute functions as a doctoral seminar, allowing participants to test doctoral proposals/projects in the company of guest professors and scholars serving as mentors. ATSI is unique in that it offers an Asian thematic focus for students who otherwise may not have the help and support of an Asian professor/faculty in their place of study, and promotes enhanced cultural awareness. This is the 8th ATSI held at LTSP. This year’s faculty mentors included Dr. Peter Cho Phan (Igancio Ellacuría Professor of Catholic Social Thought, Georgetown University, Washington DC). Dr. Kwok Pui Lan (William F. Cole Professor of Christian Theology and Spirituality, Episcopal Divinity School, Cambridge, MA), Dr. Nami Kim (Associate Professor of Religious Studies, Spelman College, Atlanta, GA), Dr. Tat-siong Benny Liew (Class of 1956 Professor of New Testament, College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA), Dr. W. Anne Joh (Associate Professor of Systematic Theology, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, Evanston, IL), Dr. J. Jayakiran Sebastian (Academic Dean and H. George Anderson Professor of Mission and Cultures, and Director, Multicultural Mission Resource Center, The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA), and Dr. J. Paul Rajashekar (Luther D. Reed Professor of Systematic Theology, The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA).
The Rev. Dr. J. Paul Rajashekar is program director of ATSI. Including this year, over 140 scholars from the United States, Canada, Indonesia, Napal, The Philippines, Myanmar, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Vietnam, Germany and India have participated in the program, as well as spending time in fellowship and visiting Philadelphia.
