Class Notes – September 2016
Pastor Kurt Lammi, LTSP class of 2008, lead the congregation he serves – St Paul Lutheran Church, Dog Leg Road, Dayton, Ohio – in celebrating their
200th anniversary on Sun July 31, 2016. As part of the celebration, all of the former pastors who are still living (4 of them) plus the bishop of the Southern Ohio Synod were present to help lead worship. The celebration also included the unveiling and dedication of a new Ohio Historical Marker (below left) which recognizes St Paul as a historically significant site in the state. Later this fall, Pastor Lammi will be publishing a new history book of the congregation called Celebrating God’s Faithfulness for 200 Years: The History of St Paul Lutheran Church, Dog Leg Road, Dayton, Ohio 1816-2016 (below right). The book will be over 300 pages long and feature over 500 pictures. It will be available on Amazon for $45. As a preview of the history book, Pastor Lammi made a slideshow for the congregation featuring 100 pictures from the congregation’s 200-year history. It can be seen here.
The Rev. Matthew James (MDiv 2009) | Director of Admissions, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, Chicago, Illinois
The Rev. Matthew L. James was called to serve as Director of Admissions at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago starting September 1, 2016. He brings to the position extensive experience as a campus chaplain, mentor, and advisor. He has most recently served as Associate Pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Worcester, Massachusetts, and as Protestant Campus Chaplain at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. While earning the master of divinity degree at LTSP, Matt worked as a student assistant in the seminary Admissions Office.
John Weit, AIM (MAR 2009) | Program Director for Music of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Chicago, Illinois
John Weit has been called as Program Director for Music of the ELCA. John will begin his call on October 17th. He completed a seven-year call as Cantor to Trinity Lutheran Church in Worcester, Massachusetts where he facilitated the worship and music life of this urban congregation, served as organist, and conducted various choirs and ensembles. John earned the Master of Arts in Religion degree with a concentration in Liturgy and Music from LTSP in 2009, and while a student served for one year as Interim Seminary Musician, coordinating and leading music for daily chapel liturgies and conducting the seminary choir. John is a rostered Minister of Word and Service in the ELCA, and serves on the boards of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians and Leadership Program for Musicians.
The Rev. Leila Ortiz (MDiv 2009) | Metropolitan Washington, D.C. Synod, Washington, DC
The Rev. Leila Ortiz was called in July 2016 as Assistant to Bishop The Rev. Richard H. Graham of the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. Synod of the ELCA. She had been serving as Associate Pastor at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Gaithersburg, Maryland.
The Rev. Rick Summy (MDiv 1985) | Senior Pastor, Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, Apple Valley, Minnesota
The Rev. Rick Summy became the senior pastor at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Apple Valley, Minnesota, starting September 15. Pr. Summy previously served as senior pastor at Atonement Lutheran Church, Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, and as LTSP’s Director of Admissions.
The Rev. Dr. Denise Brown (MDiv 1981, DMin 2013) | Chaplain, Filling Home and Luther Home, Napoleon, Ohio
The Rev. Dr. Denise Brown won the United States Masters National Championship 10 mile Open Water race in Newport, Vermont, and competed in the USMS National Pool Championships in Portland, Oregon, August 17-21, and in the Escape from Alcatraz swim in San Francisco, California, on August 28
The Rev. Emily Theobald-Rowlands (MDiv 2008) | Pastor, Christ Lutheran Church, Vienna, West Virginia
In October 2016, Rev. Emilie Theobald-Rowlands will be completing the 2-year program of the Chautauqua Clergy Leadership Program at Chautauqua Institution. The Chautauqua Clergy Leadership Program (CCLP) is funded by the Lilly Endowment and designed to cultivate the potential of selected clergy leaders to become “public pastors” – i.e., leaders of spiritual and civic renewal in their towns, cities and communities.
At the West Virginia-Western Maryland Synod Assembly held in Bridgeport,West Virginia, Pastor Rowlands was elected to a 3-year term to the Synod Council beginning Sept. 1, 2016. In addition, Pastor Rowlands serves on the ELCA Appalachian Leadership Team Task Force.
The Rev. Craig Miller (MDiv 1996) | Pastor, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Brooklyn, NY
The Rev. Craig Miller has been called to the Upper Susquehanna Synod of the ELCA, where he will serve as assistant to Bishop Barbara Collins beginning October 3, 2016.
