Director - Urban Theological Institute

The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) is seeking a gifted church leader for the position of Director of the Urban Theological Institute (UTI).

The UTI of LTSP is dedicated to providing theological education that is both Afrocentric and ecumenical for leaders in the Black churches. Through courses and programming the UTI provides opportunities for clergy and laypersons to prepare themselves for service as educated leaders of the church. The seminary is also committed to providing evening and Saturday classes so that the best in theological education is made available to working pastors and laypeople. The UTI does this work through the Black Church concentration in the Master of Divinity or Master of Arts program, a Certificate Program in Church Leadership and through the Preaching with Power series.

Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as a representative of the seminary and build relationships with the Black church community in the Philadelphia metropolitan area
  • Counsel and advise MDiv and MAR students in the Black Church Concentration and students matriculating under the agreement with Payne Theological Seminary
  • Provide senior administrative oversight and coordination of the Certificate Program in Church Leadership-a two-year theological program for clergy and lay leaders
  • Serve as a recruiter for new students in the UTI program with Enrollment Services staff
  • Serve on associated committees
  • Plan and implement the annual Preaching with Power series, a major event featuring prominent preachers and lecturers
  • Provide senior administrative oversight and coordination of the Black Sacred Music initiative, which includes both academic and programmatic components
  • Be available during evening and Saturday classes during the semester to address any student or instructor issues that may arise
  • Serve as the primary liaison to the UTI Committee of Advisors
  • Eligibility to teach courses, depending on his/her educational qualifications

Accountability
The Director will:

  • Be accountable to the Dean
  • Work closely with the faculty member occupying the Jeremiah A. Wright Sr. Chair in Black Church Studies and with the Director of Student Services
  • Sit on the President's Cabinet

Qualifications:

  • An MDiv degree, with ordination by his/her faith tradition and a D.Min degree. Preference will be given to those with further theological degrees.
  • A high, demonstrated level of administrative and organization skill and staff experience
  • Familiarity with and connections within the African-American community in Philadelphia
  • Successful candidate should have a background in ministry with a heart for the church
