LTSP Notes – September 2016
Faith on the Avenue featured in Breidegam Connection Exhibition Space
Faith on the Avenue, Religion on a City Street (2014, Oxford Press), written by LTSP Charles A. Scheiren Professor of Church and Society and Director of the Metropolitan/Urban Concentration the Rev. Dr. Katie Day with photographs by Edd Conboy, was the subject of the first exhibit in the new Breidegam Connector. From the over 70 photographs in the book, a selection is on display the connector’s ground floor, and a reception was held was held Wednesday, September 7 to mark the opening.
From the publisher:
“Based on five years of in-depth research, including interviews and demographic analysis, Faith on the Avenue draws on Germantown Avenue’s rich history, from the earliest settlements of Swedish, Dutch and German immigrants to the Revolutionary War, the Yellow Fever Epidemic, the Underground Railroad, Civil Rights Movement and the beginnings of many American faith traditions. A crucial resource for urban policymakers and leaders of urban congregations.”
The photographs in Faith on the Avenue illustrate the diverse worship communities which call the avenue home, from “megachurches” to storefront congregations, and representing a wide range of faith traditions.
