Meet Kamala Khan, the new Ms. Marvel from Jersey City...

The sequel to Marvel Comics' Thor comes out this Friday (8 November). But a more epic announcement from Marvel was the rebranding of the classic 1960s Ms. Marvel to keep up with the times.

Kamala Khan, a 16 year old teenager from Jersey City, from an immigrant Pakistani Muslim family returns as the latest Arab American super hero.  Last year DC Comics re-released the Green Lantern story with Simon Ba'az, an Arab American Muslim from Detroit. Naturally, these moves by Marvel are to provide both positive images of American Muslims to younger audiences (and the not so young audiences who follow comics... who me?)  Naturally, there will be critics who claim such artistry is merely "propaganda."  Of course, comic storylines have always shadowed contemporary social issues, and Marvel editor Sana Amanat notes the  "desire to explore the Muslim-American diaspora from an authentic perspective."
