Outright Gifts

All gifts to The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia are significant. Whether you are establishing an endowment, making an annual contribution, giving in memory or in honor of someone, or donating to a capital project, there are a variety of ways you may contribute.

Cash or Check

Current law allows you to deduct the full amount of your cash gift (or the full fair market value of securities) in the year the gift is made up to an amount equal to 50 percent of your adjusted gross income. Any portion of the deduction in excess of that 50 percent limitation may be carried forward for up to an additional five years. As a result, your out-of-pocket cost of a cash gift will almost certainly be lower than the benefit received by LTSP.

Please do not send cash through the mail. Checks may be sent to:

Matching Gifts

Matching gifts are an excellent way to increase your support without additional out-of-pocket expense.

If you are a member of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Thrivent Choice gives you the opportunity to designate your Choice dollars to the seminary. More information on Thrivent Choice is online at www.thrivent.com/thriventchoice (opens a new browser window).

For corporate matching gifts, contact the human resources office at your employer or your spouse's employer to inquire about their matching gift program.

Gifts of Stock

If you have owned a stock for more than 12 months and it has appreciated in value during that time, you would incur a capital gains tax by selling it. However, if you give that stock to LTSP as a gift, you avoid the capital gains tax and can also claim an income tax deduction for the full fair market value of the gift up to an amount equal to 30 percent of your adjusted gross income. Any unused deduction may be carried forward for up to five years.

To make a gift of securities, first call or email James Walker at 800.286.4616 ext. 7308 to inform us of the number of shares and the name of the stock(s) and/or mutual fund(s) you are planning to send. We will fax transfer instructions to your financial advisor or broker.
