Do Not Be Afraid

I’ve been struck by two things while trying to follow Karl Barth’s advice this spring. A Swiss theologian and pastor, Barth was also perhaps the leading Protestant theologian of the 20th century, and he was fond of saying that good preachers hold the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other. And so while reading both the Scriptures and the newspaper, I’ve first noticed how frequently fear seems to be the topic of the day.

“COURAGE Moving Forward…” was the theme of the 2016 Spring Convocation of The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) on Monday, April 11 and Tuesday, April 12, 2016. There was time for learning, fellowship, and renewing acquaintances with alumni and friends of LTSP, and events including the Alumni/Faculty Reception, Easter Vespers, and the annual banquet where Distinguished Alumni were recognized.

Not for Our Eyes: Readers Talking to Themselves and Sometimes God

After 17 years, the Rev. Dr. Karl Krueger (MDiv 1980) is retiring from The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. Dr. Krueger’s farewell presentation, on May 12, 2016, was entitled, “Not for Our Eyes: Readers Talking to Themselves and Sometimes God.” It highlighted the marginal notes in books that belonged to some noteworthy individuals, books now housed in the Rare Book Room of the library.

The 152nd Commencement

The 152nd Commencement

The 152nd Commencement of The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) saw 55 seminarians receive certificates and degrees in recognition and celebration of their completion of theological studies. Commencement was held Tuesday, May 18, 2016, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lansdale, Pennsylvania.

Breidegam Connector Dedicated June 2

The Breidegam Connector, which joins the Krauth Memorial Library and The Brossman Center on the LTSP campus, provides new gathering space and accessibility to the historic library building. The community gathered on June 2, 2016, to dedicate the Connector, thank generous donors and funders of the project, and to celebrate this new asset to the LTSP and wider community.

Asian Theological Summer Institute 10th Anniversary

The Asian Theological Summer Institute at The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, celebrating its 10th year, brought sixteen doctoral students of Asian heritage to the LTSP campus for a week of mentorship, learning, and fellowship. The 10th Institute convened from May 31 – June 4, 2016.

The Hein-Fry Book of Faith Challenge

Seminarian John Heidgerd (MDiv 2015), serving his internship year at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church, New York City, was among eight students – one from each of the seminaries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – to be part of the Hein-Fry Book of Faith Challenge. John’s presentation was on “The Soul Cafe.”
