Public Leadership

Beyond the labels of sacred and secular, Public Leadership moves us to a new place where the tradition of faith and disciplines such as business and social work come together
to participate in the changing world.

We are pleased to present our newest degree program, the Master of Arts in Public Leadership. In collaboration with Temple University, The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia will train those committed to making a difference in the world through public leadership. This program moves us beyond the categories of church and world, beyond the labels of secular and sacred, to a new place where the tradition of faith emerges in language and action to serve a world in need.

With the first cohort graduated in May 2011, the Master of Arts in Public Leadership is the first of its kind. An integrative, innovative degree program is also a pilot for what we hope will be a long line of integrative degree programs that find their center at the intersections between such things as theology and law, theology and medicine, and theology and science.

Along with coursework taught by some of the most creative, passionate, and involved scholars in Philadelphia, the Public Leadership program immerses the student in hands-on experience with people and institutions nearest to the ground.  The integration of theological disciplines and social context provides multi-layered learning and exposure to a wide range of leaders.

Dr. Jon Pahl, LTSP professor and chief architect of the program, has said, "... I've felt acutely the gaps that exist between what the church says about justice, what people in pews and social ministry organizations know about justice, and what actually gets done." Our hope is to train leaders who will be in church, yes, but also in the world.  Leaders who speak the languages of business and theology, who can weave theological and biblical principles into the world's economic, political and social fabric.
