Reflecting on the Islamic Declaration on Climate Change
An international Islamic symposium held this week in Istanbul (17-18 August 2015) announced a new declaration on global climate change supporting the Kyoto Protocol. This declaration, while not binding on any particular Muslim community, provides scriptural and theological arguments from the Qur’an for pro-active responses to global climate change. The two important theological assertions are God’s creation for balanced ecosystems, and humanity’s responsibility for the stewardship of creation.
The document provides and important opportunity for Christian-Muslim cooperation on local environmental issues.
