Spring Convocation 2014

Our founding and the renewal of the church
Tuesday and Wednesday, April 29-30, 2014

1864. On the battlefield and off, we struggled to define who would be as a nation, including our religious identity. From those battlefields – literal and ideological – emerged The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP).  Resistant to and suspicious of the emerging evangelical movement, LTSP’s founders broke away from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg in an effort to preserve the German heritage and confessional identity of the old country. They found a home in Philadelphia, a city that continues to be a profound influence, pushing LTSP’s leaders to wrestle with the world around us and raising the questions that every institution must address: What is the role of heritage and tradition? How do culture and context shape us?

This year’s Spring Convocation celebrates 150 years of The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia by looking at our founding and the renewal of the Church. Scholar, historian, and church leader the Rev. Dr. Philip Krey’s session will address the school’s founding, and how we have come to both embrace and look again at our beginnings.  The Rev. Dr. Kevin R. Johnson, Pastor of Bright Hope Baptist Church in Philadelphia, will speak at a session about renewal from his perspective as a modern day civil rights leader. The Rev. Beth Ann Stone, Pastor and Assistant to the Bishop in the Upper Susquehanna Synod, will present a session about renewal from her perspective of bridging generations and cultures, particularly those outside of the church. All three sessions will offer “TEDTalk” like presentations by the speaker, with LTSP professor the Rev. Dr. Katie Day serving as facilitator and commentator for our conversations. Please join us for this exciting event as we explore “Our Founding and the Renewal of the Church.”
